New Family Newsletter

HAPPY NEW YEAR

The new year brings many exciting events at SSPP.  All Catholic schools across America celebrate Catholic Schools Week from January 30 through February 4.  The list of events is included in this newsletter.

We have begun to experience the construction along Vandalia (Rt 159).  This will be a long project and will force us to make accommodations to our routine.  It also brings the beginning of phase one of the parish Master Plan.  That phase includes the installation of a new heating plant and the addition of air conditioning.  The west façade will also see changes as some window bays will be replaced to get a better insulation factor.  I serve on the committee will continue to push for as little disruption to our school year as possible.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  I am always glad to listen to parents input.

Mr. Mike Palmer

Parish Office

We had two successful fundraising events for our Roof Campaign.  We raised almost $1800.

The teachers will be holding a  Regifter’s Paradise Quartermania to support both the Annual Fund and Roof Campaigns on February 28th at the KC Hall.

Our annual Big Bucks raffle will kick off in February.  This is a major fundraiser for the Parish and helps us meet our operational expenses.

We encourage everyone to contribute to the Annual Fund that directly supports our school.

If you have any questions regarding our fundraising initiatives, contributions, or would like to volunteer, please contact the Parish or School Office.

Thank you, Teri Lesicko

EMERGENCY CLOSING OF SCHOOL
It is the policy of SS. Peter and Paul to close school when Collinsville Unit 10 closes for extreme weather conditions or for some other emergency.  If Unit 10 is not in session, the Principal of St. John Neuman and I will make the decision.
School closings will be listed on channels 2, 4, and 5. Additionally, parents will be called by the School Reach System for notification.
Please do not call the school or parish office for this information.

BULLYING POLICY
(STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM)
The purpose of the policy is to give students, parents, staff and the community at large a clear statement concerning the school’s stand against violent behavior and the consequences that will follow violation of the policy.
Objectives

To ensure the safety of students and staff, their property, and the property of the school.

To maintain a safe, supportive, Christian, nurturing, non-punitive school environment highly conducive to learning.

Bullying is not tolerated.  PLEASE REFER TO THE STUDENT/PARENT HANDBOOK FOR COMPLETE POLICY.

MARKET DAY
From September through May, we hold a Market Day fundraiser.  Parents may order food items and SSPP receives 10% of the total.  An order sheet is sent home in the Friday folder, but you can go online as well at www. Marketday.com.  If you have any questions, call the school office or send a Fast Direct.

SCRIP GIFT CARDS
The SCRIP program allows the school to raise funds on your everyday purchases.  If you know you are going to make an upcoming purchase, you just purchase a scrip card from the school office prior to your purchase and then redeem your scrip card at the retailer/restaurant/gas station.  The school receives from 1%-10% from the cards you purchase.  It’s just that easy.
The school office has gift cards for many stores, restaurants, and activities.    We keep many in stock or we can order them very quickly (overnight is possible for a large order).  Currently, we have the following department store gift cards in the school office available for purchase: Aeropostale, Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, Cabela’s, Collinsville Sports Store, Dell, Dillard’s, Game Stop, Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, Gordman’s, Hallmark, Home Depot, JC Penney, Jo Ann Fabrics, Kmart, Kohl’s, Lowe’s, Macy’s, Sears, TJ Max, Marshalls, Toys-R-Us, Walgreens and Wal-Mart.
These gift cards have already been activated and are ready for use. We can order other cards for you that are not in our stock.  To see the entire list of cards that are available go to www.glscrip.com
In the near future, you will be receiving additional details and ways to order SCRIP.  In the meantime, please feel free to call the office or stop by and make a purchase.

PARISH HOMECOMING INVOLVEMENT PROGRAM - HIP
In an effort to increase participation in the Parish Homecoming the Homecoming Involvement Program has been implemented. The goal of the program is to have all school families actively involved in this Parish fundraiser. The strength of our school community relies heavily on the support and involvement of all the families of Ss. Peter and Paul Parish.
Policy: Each family is required to work one shift at the homecoming or work a total of 4 hours in activities before or after the homecoming.
As planning continues for this year’s Parish Homecoming, you will be receiving specifics on timing and volunteer opportunities.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
JANUARY 31 - FEBRUARY4, 2011

Our Catholic School’s Week theme this year  is “A+ For America Catholic Schools.”

Thank you in advance for taking your children to Mass this weekend at SSPP. It is important that the parishioners of SSPP see our students. The parish subsidizes every student here at SSPP.

Special thanks goes out to the parents/ guardians/ grandparents who financially support our school. That is certainly a great sacrifice in the current economic climate. I believe that your investment returns a great dividend. Our students learn and live the Good News every day. We don’t mask our Character Ed programs, so as to be politically correct.
We practice fiscal responsibility every day. Our cost to educate is $5500 per student; Unit 10 has an $8337 per student cost. We annually have students in the top ten academically at CHS, as well as those who go to a Catholic high school. We regularly hear from CHS teachers how well our students do in their classes.
We have dedicated faculty and staff who work for an average of 67% less than their counterparts at Unit 10. Our answer for problems in education is dedication, not throw money at it. Of course, we are helped by the concern and efforts of the parents. We strive to be partners in the education and future of our students.

Parents are welcome to attend school events on Monday, Tuesday and Friday.
Enjoy the celebration that is Catholic Schools Week!

OUTSIDE RECESS
It is the policy of SSPP that the students go outside for recess.  Students with an existing medical condition that is documented by a physician and on file in the office are exempt.  We also make exceptions for students who are not feeling well on a specific day.  If the condition is long term, we must have a physician’s note.  Please do not send daily notes asking to keep students inside.  Our general cut-off to keep all of the students inside for recess is 15 degrees wind chill.  Please make sure that the students come to school dressed appropriately.
